Back-story:
While her true birthplace is unknown, Demetoria was found in a bundle of seaweed by a fisherman, caught in his daily catch. It was a strange day, being there was a lunar eclipse and the waters were riddled with more fish than the man could remember seeing in one place. Given the way she was found, the man, Airen, didn't have a moment of doubt that the child had come from the Kingdom below. Still, seeing no one around to claim the newborn, he returned to the docks with the child, bringing her home to his wife, Errinaya. It was not the kind of catch she had expected her husband to return home with but accepted the child with open arms, the couple deciding to raise her as her own. Giving her the name Demetoria, the child was now a part of the family.

During her early childhood her father would go out to see in the early morning, always looking for any sign of the child's real parents, returning home in the late evenings with no success save for his daily catch. Errinaya spent her days collecting shells and random items from the beach, making them into trinkets to sell on the market. Demetoria helped her with this. Everything was well enough for the family, until Demetoria reached her teens.

The couple had known she wasn't human but had never bothered to explain how they had stumbled upon her, so when her abilities blossomed the child was confused and angered that they had hid something so important from her. It took a bit of explaining and a few days for Demetoria to come to terms with everything. The singing she had loved to do growing up was now forbidden, the couple not wanting her to get herself in trouble by accidentally luring someone into a dangerous situation. Nor was she allowed to publicly display her affinity of water. It was all reasonable requests but without her singing Demetoria felt out of place.

So she quietly continued to help Errinaya with her shop, collecting items and making trinkets to sell. All the while, any chance she got, she would slip away to walk along the beach while no one was around so that she could sing. It was the only time she felt as though she were herself. Her adoptive parents have become no wiser about these moments, though they do have their suspicions and hope she manages to keep herself out of trouble.
